Late breakfast at SILO – Friedrichshain
Coffee shop and Friedrichshain. Not even that long ago the combination of these two words sounded odd. Friedrichshain used be – and is actually still – more known for its clubs, pubs and bars. Though, more and more coffee shops are opening in this neigbourhood, making Friedrichshain a coffee-friendly area! Which is a development close to my heart.
One of these coffee bars is SILO, located nearby Boxhagener Platz. Marlon took me out for late breakfast a few weeks ago and introduced me to the place.
The first thing that stands out is their interior; SILO has a simple, industrial style with lots of wooden accents, wooden furniture and grey concrete floors. It looks bright and feels welcoming.
We ordered an iced coffee and a cappuccino. The Barn, a well-known Berlin coffee roaster, roasts their coffee beans. The taste is not that strong, but this definitely doesn’t influence the nice rich flavor.
Just a coffee was not enough for us this afternoon, so we also ordered sweet potato-balsamic toast – made with sourdough bread by Berlin bakery Sirino – from their lunch menu. The dish was delicious. The scrambled eggs with ham, we ordered from the breakfast menu, were really good as well. We sat outside in the sun while watching the Friedrichshain crowd passing by.
Service is good and the staff is friendly, the one thing that could bother people is that the staff does not speak German but English. But to me that’s just a small detail.
So, if you are in Friedrichshain -maybe the morning after a wild night of clubbing- you don’t have to leave the area to get your hangover-fix, a visit to SILO will be all you need.
